Woody and Buzz have each other to go on wild epic adventures together. Thelma and Louise stuck together until the very end. The iconic best friends list can go on and on!
I always admired these amazing relationships and wanted to learn more about what really makes someone a great friend? On my journey to become a better friend, I have found these few tips will help you build lasting friendships in your life.
Shut Up and Listen
We all want to come home and talk about our day. But do you take the time to ask your friend how their day is? When you do remember to ask, can you keep quiet and really listen to them? I am sure many of us forget this one simple task. It can be hard at times, but allowing your friend to talk will make the two of you closer and become better pals. You will learn interesting facts about them and they will appreciate you so much more for listening.
It’s the Little Things that Matter
Small gestures like bringing their favorite coffee to work or stopping by on your way home to get them food all add up. Although it may seem like a little thing, it will mean a lot to them. They will feel special and be so grateful you remembered them!
Be Dependable and Keep Your Word
When you say you will do something…. Do it.
We have all been there. The pain and betrayal of being let down by a friend or relative can make you never want to trust anyone ever again. Please, be one of the few who are different! When you are not sure, just be honest and say you are not sure if you can make it. If you are too busy to help, then do the right thing and respectively tell your friend you are unavailable. If this person is a true friend they will understand. Bottom line – be honest and dependable.
Respect, Respect, and of course Respect
This is something I feel everyone deserves. We are all human beings and should be treated with respect. I always make a point to be respectful, even with those who have hurt me. It shows you have character. It is easy to be rude. It takes someone with self-control and wisdom to be respectful. People will admire your maturity and appreciate you for being respectful.
Stay in Touch
The key component to keeping a friendship alive is you have to make an effort to reach out to your companion. Even just for a quick chat over the phone or simple text message to say hi, they all count. Good friends do not need to you see each other every day. A great friendship is one where both of you are connected and even distance can’t destroy that.
Accept and Forgive
Your friends may irritate you. It is the silly things they do that make them fun to be around, and other things that make them a nightmare. It is ok! If they are goodhearted people and are there for you when you need them, then accept their flaws. Love among friends is accepting them for who they are.
Also, people can make mistakes. We are all human. Forgive them if they do something wrong. Please keep in mind that this depends on the situation. It is up to you to make the choice of whether or not to extend forgiveness.
There are many ways to establish a strong friendship with someone. However, it is important to know how to maintain it. Use these simple tips today and help build a lasting relationship! What is life if you don’t have any friends to experience it with!?!
